AccuSharp 001 Knife Sharpener Review
This knife sharpener made it to the top of the heap for non-electric sharpeners in a recent issue of Cooks magazine. So, I decided to try it. The Accusharp is definitely a step up from a flat stone. It provides a more consistent edge in amateur hands and, gets knives sharp quickly. I liked it enough that I ordered several more for friends and family members with kitchen drawers full of dull knives.

Seen recommended in Cook’s Magazine. It actually does what it claims to do. The position of the handle is awkward to get used to at first, but it makes sense. Follow instructions and don’t use force and it will sharpen kitchen knives that are unsafe when dull. Terrific buy!

Even though it sharpens very well, it is not a professional edge. I don’t recommend this if you have expensive knives. It puts a strange edge on your blade that can not be honed so all you can do is sharpen again and again which will eventually eat up the blade. Of course it will take years for this to happen. I recommend this for cheap knives.

This knife sharpener works extremely well with thin blades (kitchen knives or similar knifes). My Swiss army knife is sharpened within seconds! This sharpener, however, does not work well with thick blades like swords and katanas unless they are already sharpened or unless they are thin. Overall a great product, recommended!

I was reluctant to buy another knife sharpener since I had one which worked pretty reasonably. But all these reviews, plus the recommendation by Cooks Illustrated sold me. Hey, it’s only [...] bucks, why not? After sharpening every knife in my kitchen, I’m asking myself, why not earlier? The knives were so sharp, I was paranoid that I would slice myself open with them. The design is ingenious. Unlike other some other sharpeners where you move the knife across the sharpener, you place the knife with the blade facing up and move the sharpener over it. In this way, you get more even pressure across the entire blade, so you manage to sharpen the tips very well also. Moreover, because the blade is resting on a flat surface upside-down, the knife is sharpened more evenly on both sides of the blade–something which makes a major difference for both sharpness in cutting and for homes who have both left-handed and right-handed cooks like mine. The only thing that has disappointed me is that the picture on the back of the packaging implies that it can sharpen serrated knives, which it can–in theory. I suspect it works best where the serrations are far apart, but on my serrated and steak knives, the serrations are too close together for the Accusharp to be effective. For ten bucks, this item is a fantastic value! You can even buy new sharpeners for when the blades become dull. Wow!

I’ve been using this product for one week and so far, its been 100% effective at keeping squirrels out of my garden. Before I started using it, my yard was a squirrel haven. I haven’t seen a single squirrel since I installed it last week, it seems as though they got the message pretty quickly. Hope it continues to work so well! The only negative comment I have is the company’s name: Contech, doesn’t inspire the confidence it deserves.

We purchased one of these to take care of our hell-spawn (raccoon) problem. The coons were digging up the yard, eating new plants, and searching for grubs. They left piles of dirt on the walkway and destruction in their wake. We purchased a battery of these scarcrow things and lined them up to create a critter-free zone and voila! No more eviscerated plants, no more dirt piles, no more coons! Its expensive, but worth it. The crow even works on dumb humans, like me! I came home late at night from the movies and found quite a surprise when my sister turned this thing on forgetting I was still out. The scarecrow got me. Repeatedly. And I deserved it. Whatever you do, don’t forget to turn it off or the UPS man won’t like you very much.

I have tried everything to keep the deer from eating my plants. Our house is next to a huge forest and seemed to be the first course on their trip through our neighborhood. Well I have 4 strategically placed Scarecrows and they don’t touch anything. Everyone else on our street now have their plants mowed down by the deer. I even have on in my front yard that is also triggered when someone walks by. Fun to see them jump. It’s also fun to watch the deer approach the Scarecrow and then jump 6 feet in the air when it goes off. Of course I forget about once a month and walk into one. It looks like I wet myself and is good for a laugh at myself.

This is the best squirrel deterrent so far. We tried pepper spray, blood powder (?), and other stinky spray but our Brooklyn squirrels weren’t deterred from digging up our expensive ground cover. We put off buying the Contech Scarecrow because of the price but it’s the only thing that works. Simple to set up but you have to play with the direction of spray and it’s scope to get the best effect (it may be good to change this every few weeks to keep the critters on their toes). It doesn’t hurt them (I read somewhere that pepper spray can blind them) and it’s FUN to watch them try to avoid the spray or get zapped by it. One problem is that they can still dig right under the Scarecrow where the spray doesn’t reach but their little brains don’t remember that from day to day. I wish I had bought it sooner. Great product–wish it was $20 cheaper.

I live in an area that is dominated by cat lovers, but I am a bird lover. My feeding area for birds became a smorgasbord for cats. Every few days I would find a pile of Dove feathers. I was seriously thinking of taking down my feeders. Then a friend told me of a water sprayer to keep unwanted pests out of your yard, I looked on Amazon and sure enough there was the Scarecrow. I ordered one and in five days had my new defense against cats. I had a great time watching cats scatter as the Scare Crow sprayed them with water. In only two days things changed from direr straights to victory. The enemy now cowers in cover far from my bird feeders. Instead of saying “hey you cats get out of here,” I say “hey cats, do you want a bar of soap and towel with that shower?”
