Toro Ultra 12 Amp #51599 Review
I bought a Troy-Bilt blower/vac and it started on fire after the first 15 minutes, which is always a little bit of a letdown, to say the least. That was my first foray into the world of blower/vacs, so needless to say I was a little apprehensive to buy another one. This Toro model is as awesome as the Troy-Bilt was crappy. I don’t want to use the blower, I just need it to suck up leaves in my garden where a convential rake isn’t a good idea. I think the vacuum works great — it chews up big, thick magnolia leaves like nothing, and the fully adjustable speed control is much better than something that is either on, off, or maybe offers just two speeds. This one is great so far!

I originally thought I would get a gas hand-held blower to supplement my back pack unit. Consumers Reports rated the electrics better than gas-powered, and rated this one the best, so I went with it. After 15 minutes of use I knew my back-pack blower was history! I told my wife it was going away in the next garage sale! This Toro toll is ALL you need. I have 7 Mulberry trees that drop huge leaves ALL the time. The vacuum/mulcher is perfect for routine pick-up, the blower for heavier accunulations. This one of the best things I’ve purchased in years! I put this thing right up there with my 320,000 mile Toyota pick-up truck!!

The blower function of the Toro Ultra is great (though don’t use it around mulch!!!) The vac feature doesn’t suck (but that’s not a complement). You have to get right over the leaves/debris that you are trying to get rid of, and they have to be pretty lightweight (i.e leaves from hedge clippings are sometimes a bit too much). It works; it’s just not nearly as good as the blower function, which is quite powerful and less noisy than the gas blower that I have. Overall a very good purchase (though I wish it were cordless).

Because of the overwhelmingly positive reviews for this blower/vac (as compared to others), I decided to order it. I’ve used it 4 or 5 times. I am impressed with it’s power in both of it’s uses. As advertised, the mulcher condenses what would be 16 bags into 1. I live on a property that has 2 huge oak trees so I find this particularly valuable. Each time I use it I start with the blower and then switch to the vac/mulcher. The process is simple and quick. However, I do worry that with a lot of use the plastic snap that needs to be pressed to switch between the two operations may someday crack. That said, it hasn’t yet. Toro; If you’re reading this: Plastic is not supposed to bend in the same place over and over again without a hinge. Something to think about. To end on a positive note any of the electric yard tools are better than gas-powered for our environment. The small gas engine is an environmental nightmare!

At the last minute, I bought this blower instead of the cheaper blower with the plastic fan blade. I’m not sure how much difference the metal fan will make, but I found the variable speed dial very useful, and made me glad I got this model instead. This feature was not on the cheaper blower. I only wish this blower was lighter, but other similar models are not much lighter. This blower is powerful enough to kick back a little when you turn it on full blast! One small design mistake is that there is no cord retention system. You have to tie the two cords together before you plug them together or they will just pull apart at the first tug.
